Defined, Self-hypnosis (or autosuggestion) is a method of using your thoughts to relieve your body from pain of physical symptoms, whether they be positive or negative. It’s used as an intentional way of changing the way you think, believe or perceive things. Self-hypnosis also can be used to change how you behave in the world. Self hypnosis is similar, in ways, to praying or meditation.
As you might see, this is closely related to the placebo effect. You have likely heard of the placebo effect. ie. a doctor gives a patient a sugar pill and the patient believes it’s working, then the patient gets better. In this case the patients mind, in fact, cured him not the sugar pill. Some scientists say that Self-hypnosis and the placebo effect are so closely related that it is difficult to see where one starts and the other ends.
Self-hypnosis chances for success are altered by two variables. These are how long you keep using it and how often you use it during this time. During this time the self-hypnotist repeats key phrases over in their head over and over until the thoughts are so deeply ingrained within them, that they become reality. One good example of this is a New Years resolution. Say you decide to quit smoking and for the next 3 weeks constantly reinforce your original resolution with positive thoughts. You are likely to succeed! On the other hand, if you make a resolution and quit thinking about it days later or start thinking negatively then chances are you will not succeed.
A simple way to practice self-hypnosis would be to think of a sentence or two that describes how you would like to be, or want to achieve. Here’s an example: “I would like to quit smoking on January 30th. Until then I will only smoke when I have to.” The self-hypnotist will then repeat these sentences over and over until they fall asleep. On the day of January 30th the chances of actually accomplishing this task should be much higher.
A self hypnosis cd or mp3 can help you get results. In fact, if it is your first time then I wouldn’t even try before taking a look at Steve Jones’ collection of over 200 self hypnosis cd’s/mp3’s. They are the most popular available on the net and are really cheap to buy.
If you are, by chance, looking to hypnotize someone else with great success, then the hands down best reference is conversational hypnosis.
