Both dogs and cats have two small glands that are located on either side of the anus. They are called anal glands (also known as anal sacs). The anal glands are responsible for secreting a substance through ducts (located just inside the rectum). This secretion is caused by the passing of feces, under most circumstances. This substance, as you may have guessed, has a very nasty odor.
Have you ever seen your dog or cat rubbing their butt across the carpet? Yuck. I have seen my dog walk across an entire room this way haha. It’s funny..but read on. Ever wondered why they do it? Well now you have your answer. This process is known as scooting and your pet is simply trying to relieve their anal glands.
Anal glands don’t have so much of a use in domesticated animals, today. For this reason, they sometimes become clogged and cause health problems for your dog or cat. When your pet partakes in scooting it can cause damage to the anus. Scooting is your pets attempt to relieve the clogged glands. There are things you can do that will help your dog or cat. I warn you they are not so pleasant.
Since relieving your pet’s anal glands is not pleasant I will first say that there are a few natural remedies that will help to promote good anal gland health and more regular bowel movements for your dog or cat.
Analglandz is a natural medicine that is used topically to assist with regular expression of the anal glands and to keep the anus healthy.
Keeping your pet regular is also very important when it comes to helping with their anal gland health. A high fiber diet and natural remedy can go a long way in this effort. This helps to support regular emptying of the anal glands. The glands are expressed naturally when your dog or cat has regular, healthy bowel movements.
Now for the dirty part of the post. First off your vet is familiar with this but you can easily do it at home, if you have the stomach. To express your pets anal glands, manually, you must take your fingers (or a thumb and forefinger) and apply pressure inwards and upwards until you see a fluid being expressed. This procedure will have to be done less often if you use the above natural medicines for your pet, regularly, to help support their anal gland health.
